STAN Defies Ageism with Style

When I asked Tristan Detwiler, founder, and creative director of STAN about his latest Spring/Summer 2023 collection, he mentioned his grandfather, “a classic gentleman” as the prime source of inspiration. It all became clear after that statement. Down to the age of the models he selected to wear the pieces, the vision was completely clear for his thoughtful, trendsetting, and organically creative collection of clothing. This brand has already been known for possessing a distinctive familiarity to it due to the repurposed materials of the quilt and ornate patterns and textiles. However, knowing that Detwiler was thinking of the classic sartorialism of his grandfather when producing this assortment brought everything full circle.

Mixed Ages in STAN SS 2023

Men of a certain age know themselves well and what looks best on them. They have a specific sensibility to dressing due to them living in a bygone era where society at large held the art of dressing to a high bar. That same gold standard was evoked throughout the intricate pieces that were worn at this presentation.

One of the most important pieces of the puzzle is the legendary Halstonette Alva Chinn literally “sitting pretty” wearing a golden leaf-printed dress. That attitude and the confidence of her and the rest of the charismatic characters who wore them is a testament to Tristan Detwiler’s fundamental understanding of style.

“The pieces have a flair to them, reminiscent of something you would find in a thrift shop that dates to the latter half of the twentieth century.”

These were clothes that your grandfather or grandmother would wear proudly in their heyday, but the catch is that they were made to be worn today. There are fabulous prints stitched on long coats, short sport coats, blazers, vests, you name it! What impresses the most is the subtle mixture of optimism, familiarity, and whimsicality that exudes from a single garment. For instance, there is a blazer that is made entirely out of lace, paired over a suede shirt, a red paisley shirt, with a silver bolo tie. Mr. Detwiler should be applauded for his sheer audacity and for the craftsmanship that is evident with every single product offering of the line.
